TEACHING ENGLISH IN ASIA
While few Americans have decided to learn more about Asia, it seems that just about every person in Asia is determined to know more about America. No matter where you go in Asia you find people clamoring to learn English. They range from businessmen looking to get ahead to children who see it as a necessary part of education to merchants in the street. In countries like Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea there is a long tradition of English instruction. Teachers there can expect high pay in a very structured school setting. In Thailand, and Indonesia the pay is less but so are their standards. You wont need any ESL or teaching experience. You may not even need a college degree, just an ability to speak English and a desire to teach. China is a little different. The government controls everything so expect bureaucracy. If you are willing to deal with that, you can experience China in a way no tourist can.
There are many ways to get a job. One can be arranged before you leave through a sending organization (see the list of links). This works best if you are highly qualified and you have experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). Perks can include free flights, housing, and insurance. In many part of Asia you can just go there and knock on the door or a language school. Smaller schools are much more likely to hire you if you are standing right in front of them. There is such a high demand in some places they often hire English speaking people on the spot.
English teachers are paid pretty well when compared to the local standard of living. For example, in Indonesia you can make 10 times the average local wage. You can live pretty well for that. Of course, when you go home and convert all that local currency back to dollars, you wont be rich. However you will have had a great time and gained a wealth of knowledge and experience.
